Qatar Classic History
From 1992 to 1997 Doha hosted the Qatar International, with the first Qatar Classic taking place in 2001.
England’s Peter Nicol beat Australia’s David Palmer in the finals of 2001 and 2002, and former World #1s Lee Beachill and James Willstrop kept the title in English hands either side of the 2004 World Open, before the Egyptian hold began with Ramy Ashour, Amr Shabana and Karim Darwish winning the next three tournaments.
Since then, some of the most famous names in squash have claimed the title, with three-time World Champion Nick Matthew, reigning World #1 Mohamed ElShorbagy and former World #1 Gregory Gaultier all triumphing in Doha. Gaultier is the only player not from either Egypt or England to win the title, which since his victory in 2011 has been exclusively in Egyptian hands.
