Saurav just too good against Lucas

A superb performance today from the Indian number one against Lucas Serme. It’s not like the Frenchman did anything, made wrong choices or errors, but Saurav was all over him, controlling the rallies, retrieving Lucas’ attacks and finding some winners the French just couldn’t retrieve.

First game was the longest, 13m, Lucas saving a game ball, but playing catch up the whole game. About the same story in the second, 5/3, 10/4, 11/5 in 9m. The third is even sharper, 10/2 match ball, with the French choosing that moment to play his best squash, mixing so well the height and angles, but too little too late, 11/5 in 10m…

It is the World Championships, so you are playing the best players in every single round. The depth in men’s squash today is unbelievable like you are seeing through this week. Everyone has to be focused from the first point. It is a tough sport so it is good to win 3-0.

James Willstrop and I started off as practice partners when I moved to Pontefract when I was 18. Now it has transcended squash and we are very good friends on a personal level. For a lot of people who don’t know him, he is one of the best humans I know. The amount I have learned from him is priceless.

When I was younger, I never looked more than three years down the line, and now it has been 13 years. For me, the body has to stay active, but the mind is a factor and I still want to be enjoying the game. There have been some ups and some downs, but overall, this sport has given me a lot and it has enriched my life.
