Willstrop stuns Gawad as Momen ends Tamimi run

A dramatic first day of Round Three action saw one mighty upset and a narrow end to home hopes.

By contrast with what was to follow, Simon Rosner and Diego Elias enjoyed relatively calm and comfortable wins.

But a massive upset followed as 36-year-old James Willstrop secured an 11th Worlds quarter-final in his 16th appearance with a four game win over third seed and 2016 champion Karim Abdel Gawad.

In the final match home here Abdulla Al Tamimi came so close to a third upset win, he led second seed Tarek Momen by two games to one and 6-3, but t5he Egyptian fought back to dash home hopes.
