QTerminals Qatar Classic Squash Championship: Nour El Sherbini Wins Women’s Title
Egyptian world number one Nour El Sherbini was crowned champion of the 2024 QTerminals Qatar Classic Squash Championship in the women’s category after defeating her compatriot Nouran Gohar in a thrilling final, winning three games to two on Saturday.
El Sherbini, a seven-time world champion, staged a remarkable comeback after trailing by two games to win 3-2 with scores of 10-12, 5-11, 11-6, 11-9, and 11-6. The marathon match lasted 96 minutes and took place on the main glass court at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.
The President of the Qatar Tennis, Squash, and Badminton Federation, H.E. Nasser bin Ghanim Al-Khelaifi, accompanied by the Federation’s Secretary-General Tareq Zainal and the President of the International Squash Federation Alex Gough, presented El Sherbini with the championship trophy. Nouran Gohar received the runner-up trophy.
This marks El Sherbini’s first title in Doha after finishing as runner-up twice, in 2015 when she lost to England’s Laura Massaro, and in 2023 when she was defeated by Egypt’s Hania El Hammamy.
El Sherbini expressed her immense joy at claiming her first title in Qatar, saying to Qatar News Agency (QNA), “I am very proud to win the Qatar Classic, which I’ve been aiming for in my third final here at the Khalifa International Complex.” She thanked the Qatar Squash Federation for organizing the world-class tournament and praised everyone involved in ensuring its success.
Nouran Gohar also congratulated El Sherbini on her victory, acknowledging the significance of the Qatar Classic as a major tournament. She expressed her determination to come back next year and fight for the title.
QTerminals Qatar Classic Squash Championship: Diego Elias Wins Men’s Title
Peruvian world number four Diego Elias secured the 2024 QTerminals Qatar Classic Squash Championship men’s title, defeating Egyptian world number three Mostafa Asal in three straight games on Saturday.
Elias overcame Asal in a tightly contested final, winning 12-10, 12-10, and 14-12 in a 64-minute match.
President of the Qatar Tennis, Squash, and Badminton Federation, H.E. Nasser bin Ghanim Al-Khelaifi, accompanied by Secretary-General Tareq Zainal and International Squash Federation President Alex Gough, awarded Elias the championship trophy and presented Asal with the runner-up trophy.
This is Elias’s second Qatar Classic title, having previously won in 2021. Asal, who started the season strongly with titles in Egypt and Paris, reached his first final in Doha but fell short of claiming his maiden Qatar title.
Elias expressed his delight in winning the tournament for the second time, describing the Qatar Classic as one of the biggest and most prestigious events in the sport. He praised the tournament’s organization and the competitive atmosphere.
Asal, speaking after the match, acknowledged the difficulty of facing a seasoned player like Elias and said that he lost the match on small margins in each game. He vowed to return next year with hopes of claiming the title.
